Subject: Shrewsbury Recovery Walk Sept 2018 - Volunteer Opportunities

Dear Colleague

Work is now well underway for Shrewsbury to host one of the biggest celebrations of people in recovery, the UK Recovery Walk 2018.

It will be held on Saturday 8th September and more than 5,000 individuals and families are expected to walk through the centre of the town to celebrate the event. The walk, organised by Faces and Voices of Recovery (FAVOR UK), is held every September as part of International Recovery Month. The walk is also the 10th anniversary of the first recovery walk which was held in Manchester.

The walk will start at 12.00pm and finish at the Quarry Town Park, whereby thousands of individuals and families will walk through the town centre accompanied by entertainment along the way.

The total route is 1.7 miles and takes around 45 minutes to an hour and half to complete from start to finish.  There will also be a host of activities and entertainment in the Quarry, including music, circus acts and performances.  Alongside the entertainment, there will be a range of organisations offering advice and information, as well as mutual aid groups, providing the opportunity for people to attend meetings.

The UK Recovery Walk 2018 in Shrewsbury is supported by amongst others the Mayor of Shrewsbury, Public Health England, Shropshire Council, West Mercia Police, Shropshire Recovery Partnership and several Service User Groups.

To ensure that this recovery walk is the best one yet, we need volunteers to help from various times on the day between 9am and 7pm.  Roles include setting up small marquees etc., managing of the Quarry, as well as ensuring that that visitors are welcomed to Shrewsbury and support the actual walk by providing stewarding roles to make the celebration event is a success.

There are many different opportunities to volunteer and you will be able to combine various volunteer roles on the day or you can apply for just the one. To support the volunteer roles there will be a series of briefings held during the week of the walk.

This is a great opportunity for you to participate in a fantastic event whilst experiencing and learning how uplifting and motivating meeting and talking with people who are in recovery is. Walk participants will be celebrating their achievements with their family and friends.

If you would like to be part of this uplifting day then please contact Simon Haydon, Volunteer Lead, for further details and an application form on 01743 253 981 or at simon.haydon@shropshire.gov.uk. Closing date for applications will be the 15th June.

Please forward on this e mail to anyone else who might be interested in volunteering at this event

Kind regards

Simon Haydon
