We thoroughly enjoyed the charismatic talents of French actor Omar Sy when we screened Untouchable last year, so are excited to be showing his film Chocolate this season. In this true story Sy plays the first black circus performer, Rafael Padilla – a former slave from Cuba who was discovered for his performing talents by George Footit in France. Together they formed the duo of 'Footit and Chocolate' and their comic act impressed and delighted audiences across the country, despite the frequent conflicts between each other.

VERDI'S OPERA ON SHAKESPEARE'S TRAGEDY IS CONDUCTED BY ANTONIO PAPPANO, WITH A MAGNIFICENT CAST INCLUDING ANNA NETREBKO, ŽELJKO LUÄŒIĆ AND IL DEBRANDO  D'ARCANGEL.

The warrior Macbeth fights on the side of the King of Scotland – but when a coven of witches prophesy that he shall become king himself, a ruthless ambition drives Macbeth and his wife to horrific acts.

Murder makes Macbeth king, and intrigue and butchery are the hallmarks of his brief, doomed reign. The witches make another prediction, which also comes true: Macbeth and his lady lose their lives, and justice is restored.

Verdi's life-long love affair with Shakespeare's works began with Macbeth, a play he considered to be 'one of the greatest creations of man'. With his librettist Francesco Maria Piave Verdi set out to create 'something out of the ordinary'. Their success is borne out in every bar of a score that sees Verdi at his most theatrical: it bristles with demonic energy.

Phyllida Lloyd's 2002 production for The Royal Opera is richly hued, shot through with black, red and gold. The witches – imagined by designer Anthony Wardas strange, scarlet-turbaned creatures – are ever-present agents of fate. Lloyd depicts the Macbeths' childlessness as the dark sadness lurking behind their terrible deeds.

The Royal Opera's production uses Verdi's 1865 Paris revision of the opera, which includes Lady Macbeth's riveting aria 'La luce langue.

This documentary has been making waves!  Director Mike Day won the Emerging International Filmmaker award following its world premiere at the Hot Docs Festival, where its combination of cultural and environmental ambitions attracted much attention.

In their remote home in the North Atlantic the Faroe Islanders have always eaten what nature could provide, proud to put local food on the table. The land yields little, so they have always relied on harvesting their seas.

Hunting whales and seabirds kept them alive for generations, and gave them the way of life they love; a life they would pass on to their children. But today they face a grave threat to this tradition.

It is not the controversy surrounding whaling that threatens the Faroese way of life; the danger is coming from the whales themselves.

The Faroese are among the first to feel the affects of our ever more polluted oceans. They have discovered that their beloved whales are toxic, contaminated by the outside world. What once secured their survival now endangers their children and the Faroe Islanders must make a choice between health and tradition.

It's a dilemma that Day records with empathy but no judgement, scrupulously presenting scenes of great natural wonder, exotic traditions, animal rights protests and, ultimately, the dilemma of the islanders who are now having to consider the consequences of continuing to embrace their millennial traditions.

FINALIST – Best Documentary Feature – Heartland Film Festival 2016
WINNER – Emerging International Filmmaker Award – HotDocs 2016

"Mike Day's gorgeous and complexly woven The Islands and the Whales carefully dissects the delicate situation unfolding in the Faroe Islands" – IonCinema

Christine 'Lady Bird' McPherson is a young girl who spends almost all her time fighting against her mother – with whom she has more in common than she'd like to admit.

They both care deeply for each other, but they're also extremely opinionated, strong-willed and always sure that they're right. As Lady Bird grows up, determined to go to university, we observe how their relationship constantly changes and defines them both.

Greta Gerwig makes her acclaimed directorial debut with 'Lady Bird', starring Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf.

This tale of obsession and self-doubt features what Daniel Day-Lewis has claimed will be his final film appearance.

Celebrated couturier Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Manville) are at the centre of the 1950s London fashion world, dressing royalty, film stars, heiresses and debutants with the distinct style of the House of Woodcock. But despite the many women in his life Woodcock remains a confirmed bachelor, seeking only companionship and inspiration for his work, and all under the protective eye of Cyril. That's until he meets hotel waitress Alma (Krieps) who, young and determined, will turn his carefully tailored life upside down.

In his second collaboration with Day-Lewis, director Paul Thomas Anderson paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey and the women who keep his world running.

"The pleasure here lies in the unpredictability of Paul Thomas Anderson's approach, his ability and that of his actors to surprise us with every new stitch of the movie." **** The Independent

This dark and gruesome Victorian murder mystery rounds off our season. In the gloomy streets of London a serial killer – dubbed The Limehouse Golem - is on the loose, leaving clues written in his victim's blood. The seemingly impossible task of catching the killer is given to Inspector Kildare, played by the ever reliable Bill Nighy (in a role originally given to the late Alan Rickman). Kildare must eliminate a long list of suspect, including a music hall star, before the body count rises any higher.

'The twists and turns of the last lap are genuinely good and the final dedication to Rickman distinctly poignant.' Mail on Sunday

A feature film from BBC explorer Bruce Parry and 5 years in the making where Bruce tries to find out why we have lost touch with our natural environment.

Tawai is the word the nomadic hunter gatherers of Borneo use to describe their inner feeling of connection to nature. In this dreamy, philosophical and sociological look at life, explorer Bruce Parry travels the world to learn from people living lives very different to our own. From the jungles of Malaysia to the tributaries of the Amazon, TAWAI is a quest for reconnection, providing a powerful voice from the heart of the forest itself.

Previously best known for his comedy work, Jordan Peele's directorial debut is an innovative modern horror.

Chris (Daniel Kaluuya - SkinsSicario) is anxious about his first meeting with his girlfriend's (Allison Williams - Girls) parents for the first time, who don't know that he's black.

At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined.

"In a double whammy of satire, Get Out upends all the expected tropes of the horror movie and gives middle-class white liberals a thorough skewering." ****

The Times

"To call it the most important movie of the year so far makes it sound possibly rather worthy. That's not true at all. Get Out is a comment on a highly complex situation that's also a total blast." **** Empire Magazine

Based on the unbelievable but true events, I, TONYA is a darkly comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding, and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan.

Featuring an iconic turn by Margot Robbie as the fiery Harding, a mustachioed Sebastian Stan as her impetuous ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, a tour-de-force performance from Allison Janney as her acid-tongued mother, LaVona Golden, and an original screenplay by Steven Rogers, Craig Gillespie's I, TONYA is an absurd, irreverent, and piercing portrayal of Harding's life and career in all of its unchecked----and checkered----glory.

"I, TONYA IS A WILD AND ENTERTAINING EXPLORATION OF ONE OF SPORT'S MOST CONTROVERSIAL FIGURES, SPEARHEADED BY EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES FROM THE CAST." **** Screen Rant

The disappearance of a divorcing couple's son is the catalyst for Andrey Zvyagintsev's latest state-of-the-nation feature after the award-winning Leviathan in 2014. Those familiar with any of the director's previous credits – which include The Return (2003) and Elena (2011) – will know to expect cutting social commentary, impeccable direction and striking characterisation; this is another masterful vision of contemporary Russian life from one of world cinema's foremost directors.

When twelve-year-old Alyosha (Matvey Novikov) goes missing after school one day, his parents Zhenya (Maryana Spivak) and Boris (Aleksey Rozin) must put aside their mutual loathing and acrimonious divorce proceedings in order to help find their missing child. Wrapped up in their own individual concerns, they are unprepared for the time-consuming and emotionally fraught task ahead of them. Winner of both the Jury Prize at Cannes and Best Film at London Film Festival, Loveless is not to be missed.

"Andrei Zvyagintsev's Loveless is a stark, mysterious and terrifying story of spiritual catastrophe: a drama with the ostensible form of a procedural crime thriller. It has a hypnotic intensity and unbearable ambiguity which is maintained until the very end." ***** The Guardian
