WW I Shrewsbury commemorative event

Message from Suzi Wilkinson, Shrewsbury PR.

PRESS RELEASE

MEMORIAL BED WILL REFLECT OUTBREAK OF WAR

Members of the public are invited to help to mark the 100th anniversary since the outbreak of the First World War at a commemorative event in the Quarry this weekend.

Civic dignitaries will gather at the Bandstand on Saturday [AUG 2] for a short commemoration of readings and music in recognition and remembrance of the outbreak of war in 1914.

Proceedings will begin at 11.30am and will be led by the Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Beverley Baker.

School children across Shrewsbury have already done their bit to help mark the occasion by decorating wooden poppies which will form part of a Flanders bed display in the Dingle gardens.

The memorial bed has been designed by Shrewsbury Town Council’s horticultural team, with help from the British Ironworks Centre in Oswestry, to reflect the outbreak of war.

The display will be officially dedicated by the Mayor as part of the overall centenary commemorations.

Councillor Ioan Jones, who is leading the commemoration committee said: “The poppy is a powerful symbol of remembrance and this is a wonderful example of how a local community initiative can help shape our national commemorations.”

Dear Mr Riches,

Your email has been forwarded to me as I am the Case Officer for this application. I would like to take this opportunity to respond to the questions you have raised in your email.

1. Our neighbour consultation policy (which can be viewed online here; http://new.shropshire.gov.uk/planning/applications/the-application-process/  ) is that letters will be sent to all properties with a common boundary. As far as I can tell from the system Myddle House and Powis House do not share a boundary with the site so that's why they did not receive a letter, however it must have been an oversight to not select Kelliam House for a letter and I can only apologise for this. However as per the policy a site notice was also produced and we do this so to cover any neighbours that may have been missed off, and thus included as part of the consultation.

2. I have had discussions with the applicant and can confirm the following is proposed to be served on site:

·         Hot sandwiches (toasted paninis and tea cakes)

·         Homemade soup in colder months

·         Cold sandwiches

·         Cakes

·         Hot drinks (tea and coffee)

·         Cold drinks (non-alcoholic)

It is not the intention of this application to create a takeaway or a café in the traditional sense of the word as food would merely be toasted/heated on site, not cooked. The applicant has stated that the intention is to create a tea room, providing a space for relaxation and to enjoy non-alcoholic drinks and snacks (as listed above). As far as possible the applicant wishes to use local or homemade produce.

 3. Refuse collection at the forecourt of Memorial Hall for the application site and neighbouring properties will continue unaltered.

4. It has been noted to me that the yearly Christmas tree is kindly gifted by the Gittins family. The applicant has confirmed that if the family still wish to provide the kind gift then she would be delighted for it to remain outside Memorial Hall for the foreseeable future.

I hope the above information is useful to you but if you have any further questions then please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards,

Eleanor

Arts Commission - change of date.

-------- Original Message --------
Subject: LISTING ERROR: Please note, Qube's arts commission deadline is August 4th
Date: Mon, 21 Jul 2014 16:09:07 +0100
From: Elaine Reynolds <e.reynolds@qube-oca.org.uk>
To: undisclosed-recipients:;

Qube is offering an exciting commission opportunity to artists of any discipline to create a new work to be completed by and presented/ exhibited in spring 2015.

The aim is to highlight and celebrate the work of Sir Robert Jones and Dame Agnes Hunt, early 20th century pioneers in orthopaedics and healthcare. Their work in the development, treatment and rehabilitation of injured soldiers during in the First World War paved the way for many modern orthopaedic practices.

Robert Jones' use of an adaptive version of the 'The Thomas Splint' on ballistic injuries saved hundreds of thousands of lives, reducing deaths by up to 80 per cent by the end of WW1. His friend and professional co-worker, Agnes Hunt developed a holistic approach to nursing practice – rehabilitating the patient as a 'whole'. Together they opened a new understanding in public perception towards those disabled by war.

The art work should interpret the impact of WW1 on changing attitudes to disability, and on practices in orthopaedic medicine, informed by research made available from the archives at the renowned Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen, North Shropshire.

It is intended that through the arts, a contemporary audience may come to understand and engage in a legacy that has helped shaped modern healthcare, practice and procedure.

There will be an inclusive fee of £8,000 for the chosen artist/s to create the work. It may be created in any medium, for example from photography, textile, sculpture, film and digital media, or by other methods.

Commissions should be accessible to a broad audience. Selected artists will be expected to engage with the public in discussions, and exhibition related events.

Artists' fee: £8,000 (inclusive to include all costs, including production)

Deadline for submissions: 4th August 2014
